Eco-friendly? What makes our clothing different

When a person thinks in terms of “eco-friendly” and “sustainability,” clothing is probably not on the top of the list of things that come to mind. Neither does the textile industry make one think about pollution even though its dying and manufacturing processes make it the second largest water polluter globally and constitutes a whopping 20% of the world’s industrial water pollution. In fact, more than 8,000 chemicals are used in textile manufacturing from pesticides in growing cotton to bleaching and dying fabrics, adding up to the astronomical annual total use of 43 million tons of chemicals worldwide! Here at Aktibo Athletics, we believe in being a part of the solution to this travesty and taking our place as a champion for our Earth by using recycled, sustainable and eco-friendly materials.

Polyester fabric, also known as PET or Polyethylene Terephthalate, is a plastic fiber material. By recycling plastics commonly used in bottles and containers and reforming them into a durable thread, rPET is created, using up to 85% less energy, 90% less water and 65% fewer emissions than the manufacture of virgin polyester. Through the use of rPET in some of our athletic wear, Aktibo is saving some plastics from our landfills and putting them to better use.

Viscose bamboo is a soft, silky and sustainable fabric also used in our Aktibo Athletics line. While traditional viscose uses wood pulp from trees, bamboo is a fast growing grass that saves our forests. Not only is viscose bamboo a sustainable material, but it looks and feels wonderful with a nice drape, moisture-wicking properties and breathability.

Cotton is one of the most widely grown crops on the planet and is also one of the most chemically processed. Organic cotton, however, is held to a much higher standard requiring the use of non-genetically modified seeds; growing without toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers; providing a diverse biological agriculture; and replenishing and maintaining soil fertility. The organic cotton Aktibo uses in our products is soft and fluffy, washes well and is a cut above other materials on the market.

Aktibo Athletics is proud of our commitment to using recycled, sustainable and organic textiles and is taking our place in aiding our ailing planet. You can feel good about wearing our clothing knowing you too, are making a difference and are comfortable and cool while doing so. Take your place.
